Meet The Rare Colored Gypsy Vanner Horse, Chewbacca.

The Gypsy Vanner frequently makes it onto lists of, “most beautiful horse breeds” and when you see that long flowing hair impressive movement and kind eyes, it easy to understand why.

They Were Bred by the Gypsies of Great Britain. These strong caravan horses were part of the Gypsy travelers’ artistic show in addition to being flashy horses. The Gypsy culture viewed these horses as a representation of power and strength because of their powerful size, flowing manes and tails, and feathered legs. They still inspire surprise and wonder among breeders and bystanders as a representation of strength and power today.

The Gypsy Vanner was not a recognized breed until the latter part of the 20th century. There is little information available about the true lineages of the breed because many of the founding bloodlines were frequently kept secret by family members. What is known, though, is that this magnificent horse was produced using powerful bloodlines and a variety of Shire, Clydesdale, Dales Pony, and Friesian traits. These fundamental breeds are where endurance, a pleasant disposition, and unquestionably regal beauty come from.

The Gypsy Vanner Horse is a robust draft horse that typically stands between 12.2 and 16 hands tall. A Gypsy Vanner has a nice head and perceptive eyes. According to this description, the topline is “level” with the natural curving from the withers to the tail heads. The croup is proportionately curved to emphasize the strong capabilities of the hindquarters. The muscles are evenly distributed throughout the body, and the legs are straight and in the right positions. The Gypsy Vanner’s powerful, fancy image is “trademarked” by its athletic, ground-covering trot. The conformation of the Gypsy Vanner enables them to trot willingly, freely, and at liberty while carrying a load.

Although there is no established color standard for this breed, the majority are skewbald or piebald (having uneven patches of white and another color in addition to their normal black and white coat) (properly not black). The Gypsy Vanner Horse’s profusion of hair and “feathers,” which ought to be straight and silky, is its most distinctive physical characteristic. These horses’ thick, flowing manes and tails give them an exquisite, regal aspect.

The Gypsy breed is renowned for its soundness and sanity and is exceedingly adaptable. Although they were originally intended to draw the opulent wagons of the ancient Gypsies, horses’ gentle dispositions made them ideal for teaching young Gypsy children how to ride. The Gypsy horse is a straightforward animal to train for practically any discipline because to its exceptional disposition of friendliness, generous efforts, and faithful temperament. They can be used as therapy horses as well as for pulling carts and carriages, competing in dressage, jumping fences, and western pleasure riding.

The Registry was Founded in the 90’s.

In 1996 the first Gypsy Vanner Horses came to North America and the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society was established as a registry for the breed. The name Gypsy Vanner Horse was chosen because they were the horses that were bred to pull the caravan.
