Special Shoes Aid Foal’s Journey to Walking Success.

In the heart of the Gilliland family’s horse ranch, a special foal named Jet emerged into the world as a symbol of both challenges and triumphs. Born to their cherished mare, Josie, in May, Jet’s entry into the world came with unexpected hurdles that would soon be transformed into a remarkable journey of resilience.

Described by Susan and Robert Gilliland as a “blessing,” Jet, officially named Chalee’s Dream Jet, became the newest addition to their equine family. Josie, Jet’s mother, underwent life-saving surgery at Purdue University’s Large Animal Hospital four years ago. Now, at age 18, she gave birth to Jet, and the Gillilands turned once again to the veterinary team at Purdue for support.

Despite Josie’s uneventful labor, the joyous occasion took an unexpected turn when the veterinarians noticed Jet’s difficulties in walking and standing. Further examination revealed that the foal had malformed rear legs, compelling him to walk on his hind legs rather than his hooves.

Jet found himself in the right hands with Dr. Gillian Haanen and her dedicated team at Purdue University. Recognizing the unique challenge Jet faced, they devised a solution to aid his mobility. Special shoes were crafted to support Jet, allowing him to stand upright and aiding in the strengthening of his ligaments.

Three months of care and dedication later, the once-struggling foal made a triumphant turnaround. On August 6, Jet walked with newfound confidence, ready to embark on his journey home. The Gillilands, who had dreamed of seeing Josie’s legacy continue through her offspring, now viewed Jet as a living blessing.

In honor of their daughter Chalee and inspired by Jet’s journey, the Gillilands established the Chalee Gilliland Foundation. The foundation aims to extend compassion beyond their equine family, offering support to children and adults grappling with cystic fibrosis.

While Jet may not follow in his mother’s footsteps as a barrel racer, the Gillilands embrace his unique path. “We don’t mind that Jet isn’t a barrel racer,” expressed Susan. “This is what Chalee would have wanted.” Jet’s story transcends the challenges of physical limitations, becoming a testament to the unconditional love that binds the Gilliland family and their extended equine family.

In the end, Jet’s journey teaches us that even in the face of adversity, hope, resilience, and love can pave the way for a remarkable transformation.
