COUPLE FIND FOAL ON THE BRINK OF DEATH WITH NO MOTHER IN SIGHT.
Unfortunately, the foal had been abandoned. Those who have a heart for animals will never abandon those in need.
Whenever people we see animals or when people call us for help, we’d do our best to rescue them because we know every life is precious. This is especially true when it comes to babies or young animals who have been abandoned by their mothers. It crushes our hearts to see such innocent lives left to fend for themselves.
A couple got a call that a foal was abandoned on private property.
After learning that a newly born foal had been abandoned by its mother within the premises, the couple drove down a rock quarry in Mingo. Despite being injured, they didn’t let it hinder their mission to save the poor baby. They may be trespassing (technically), but they both knew they had to rescue the foal. They noticed that the property was large, which made the rescue more difficult.
With a vast and deserted area, it seemed impossible to look for one foal.
Thankfully, people in the nearby community offered to help the couple search for the baby horse.
They needed that help since time was of the essence.
The woman eventually located the foal, but he appeared to be weak and dehydrated.
They brought some corn syrup and water with them as first aid.
They brought the young horse in their car and started giving him a bit of corn syrup.
He was obviously hungry because he had been alone in that area for five hours with no mother to nurse or feed him. A mare abandoning her foal is normal, but it happens infrequently.
A mother horse observes her baby the moment she gives birth to them.
They’re expected to start standing thirty minutes after and walking in two hours.
If they can’t or won’t do that, the mother thinks of her foal as a liability, especially in the wild, so they reject or abandon them and return to her herd.
This is why it’s also vital for rescuers to provide nutritional supplements for the baby. The couple drove him to the nearest Tractor Supply Co. to get some milk.
They bought some Colostrum supplements, a feeding bottle, and water.
It seemed like good Samaritans were sent to them that day because the cashier helped them prepare the Colostrum milk after she learned about their emergency.
They attempted to feed the foal, but it was difficult.
He had difficulty feeding from the bottles because he didn’t know how to suckle since he wasn’t able to nurse from his mother.
They still tried and forced him to drink just a little so he would sustain himself for the rest of the trip.
The couple turned the foal over to Bella Run Equine, a specialty rescue.
This organization specializes in caring for horses, both adult and young, after they have been rescued. They have been preventing horses from being sold or traded for meat. It was a wise decision for the couple to seek professional help.
