Layka, a U.S. military combat dog, was shot four times at point-blank range by the enemy while fighting in Afghanistan. Despite her injuries, she managed to subdue the shooter and save her handler, Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, and numerous other soldiers’ lives.
The brave dog underwent surgery and survived, but her front limb was amputated. Julian put in a lot of effort to adopt her, and he was successful. “They’re not scary,” he claimed of Layka and other war dogs. They’ve done some frightening things, but they deserve to be loved.”
