AMERICAN BASHKIR CURLY HORSES: A MEMBER OF THE ONLY HYPOALLERGENIC BREED THAT SHEDS ITS MANE AND SOMETIMES ITS TAIL IN FLIGHT.

If you’re seeking a horse with a distinctive appearance and the versatility to handle many different riding disciplines, look no further than the American Bashkir Curly horse.

Curly horses were first documented in Nevada in 1898 by ranchers Peter and John Damele, a son and father who captured a curly-haired horse from a herd of mustangs. The winter of 1932 was very harsh and the only horses that could be found in the spring were curly-haired, so the Dameles decided to add more of these horses to their herd. After the winter of 1951/52. , the family had a serious number of these horses in the herd, as well as a foundation stallion, the two-year-old chestnut mustang Cooper D. The Dameles did not care much about keeping the breed “pure”, and wanting to improve their horses, they added imported blood to their herd, and among the stallions was an Arabian horse.

The only hypoallergenic breed in the world
Purebred Curly horses are medium-sized, with very strong, black, round hooves, strong bones, short backs and strong, rounded shoulders and strong hind legs. They are very hardy, calm, intelligent and friendly. They are excellent students and love the company of people. Modern curly horses are very mobile, obedient and excel in all disciplines. They successfully competed at higher levels of dressage and show jumping.

Also used for combined riding, rodeo sports, English riding, ranching, endurance and dressage. They have a characteristic long stride and bold movement, and as far as size is concerned, it varies from miniature to draft horses that are only allowed in two registers.

They appear in all the common horse colors, including appaloosa and pinto patterns. Their eyes are set wide and are often blue. Foals have a thick coat, curls in the ears and curly eyelashes.

It is not recommended to comb the mane, which could lose its curly appearance. The tail can be combed and the mane cut. Some owners of these horses collect the shed hair in the spring, donate it to research centers or use it for knitting.

It is believed that the Bashkir curly horse is the only hypoallergenic horse breed in the world: most people allergic to horses do not have allergic reactions in the presence of this beauty.
