A man and his dog were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after being stranded on a boat during Hurricane Helene. With 60-mile-per-hour winds battering the area, the rescue proved challenging for both the Coast Guard swimmer and the helicopter crew. They arrived off the coast of Sanibel Island in Florida as giant waves pummelled the boat.
Ted Hudson, U.S. Coast Guard swimmer and Petty Officer 2nd Class, recounted how he saved the man and his dog amid the ferocious storm to CNN.
Hudson shared that the man, after being rescued, thanked him and said, “When I called the Coast Guard, I decided to live.”
For Hudson, this rescue was particularly memorable—it was the first time he had saved a dog, and he said he was “super happy” to being able to do so.
