LONELY BABY DEER IN NEED OF A FRIEND LEARNS HOW TO LOVE THANKS TO TINY BUNNY.
|A volunteer licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator in the state of New York, Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife, rescues and cares for dozens of abandoned white-tailed fawns before releasing them back into the wild each year.
Nellie, a newborn baby deer, is one of the rescued white-tailed fawns. She was too young to be kept outside or with the other fawn who had already arrived at the rescue.Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife, on the other hand, recognized Nellie’s need for a companion.
Meet Polly, an adorable bunny in black and white. When Polly first met Nellie, she was only five weeks old.
Nellie began aggressively licking Polly as soon as she approached her.But Polly didn’t seem to care. She kept going around with Nellie.
The two baby animals lay down in the corner together, and it was clear that they had formed a new friendship.”In the beginning, Polly’s mother was Nellie.”It’s as if she knew this little, fragile baby needed something even though she was only a couple of weeks old,” Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife told the Dodo.Nellie and Polly were even taking cues from each other when it came to food.Nellie initially refused to eat grain, the staple food of a rescued fawn.
When Polly started eating grain and Nellie saw her, the fawn started eating the grain as well.
Nellie was very energetic and jumped around more than she ran. Her rescuer is not sure if this was because of her inborn personality, or because she was Nellie hopping around.
Polly stayed out of Nellie’s way, even hiding inside a bowl of food while she jumped around.Nellie would cuddle with Polly in a corner when she was resting or napping.Polly would occasionally lie down comfortably beneath Nellie. While Polly understood that Nellie could be overly energetic at times, Nellie also understood that she needed to be cautious around Polly.
She was always cautious and aware of where Polly was when they were lying down or napping together, ensuring she didn’t hurt her.
After a while, Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife began bringing Nellie outside so she could get used to being outdoors.
She began spending time with other rescued fawns, TinkerBell and Buddy. They were released into the wild together the following spring.
The three fawns were learning from one another and becoming affectionate with one another, much like Nellie was with Polly.Polly is staying with the rescue for the long haul as the fawns prepare for their future lives in the wild.”I’m hoping Polly remembers everything and that when I get that first fawn in the spring, Polly will know what to do again,” Fuzzy Fawn Wildlife said.
The unique friendship that exists between Nellie and Polly is truly exceptional. We are pleased that the newborn animals received the necessary love and care from one another. We’re also extra happy that we got to witness it for ourselves.
